The Minnesota Show!

This month, Story City Presents The Minnesota Show. A selection of stories inspired by this, the 32nd state in the union.
Thursday, May 30th from 7-9 pm at 2388 University Avenue, St. Paul
And we want you to participate.

Tell us about the state you’re in.
The state you brazenly defend to out-of-towners.
The land of Sky Tinted Water.
The state whose silhouette you have tattooed on your bicep. But why?
Tell us about your Minnesota.

Have a good story to tell? Email a brief summary –a few sentences ought to do the trick- to storycitymn@gmail.com by May 23rd. Full submission guidelines are written out right here: storycitymn.com/participate

And this month, we’re not alone. We’re teaming up with Rock Star Supply Company, an 826 National chapter in development, to break in their new headquarters in St. Paul. This is the great Minnesota get together.
About our collaborator:
Rock Star Supply Company trains and brings volunteer tutors to Twin Cities High School classrooms. They are becoming part of the 826 national network. 826 writing centers offer a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills.
Want to know more about what 826 will bring to the new space on University Ave? Let author Dave Eggers tell you.

Story City + Revolver: WE WANT YOU

195-nixon-peace-signs

Bless you, child, for you have sinned. It will be three weeks until your next confession. Story City is proud to present our April event, CONFESS: Skeletons in the Closet.

To be one of our star storytellers, send two or three sentences to storycitymn@gmail.com with a true story from your life that draws inspiration from one or more of the following:

We’ve all done it.

What really happened?

If you could do it again, would you?

Submissions due by April 17.

And guess what? This month we’re not alone, and we couldn’t be more excited. We’re tailgating the big game. We’re the lone tap dancer before the curtain opens.

Our theme is in anticipation of an event of the same name by our friends over at Revolver. On May 11th, they will take over the Historic Thorp Building with the following:

-the premier of “We Are All Criminals,” an interactive work by attorney/artist Emily Baxter

-works by Chris Larson, the St. Paul artist

-Revolver content turned into multimedia experiences, installation art

-DJ Shannon Blowtorch (heard below).

-BEER

So, basically, there are no excuses not to party with all your cards on the table. Purify your heart for summer. White lies? Family secrets? The one that got away?  We want you! Check out our PARTICIPATE page for more guidelines on what we look for.

Then, join us and the Revolver editors at Clubhouse Jäger on the 24th. We can’t wait!

Love,

Story City

DOGMA: Stories of a Higher Power

We took the stage with HUGE Theater improvisers in a search for god on March 28th. We found her/him under the teat of a water buffalo, on the choppy waters of Lake Calhoun, and in a blood wedding to a ghost. Check us out!

After you do that, submit to our April event in partnership with Revolver, CONFESS: Skeletons in the Closet. Details here.

Story City + HUGE Theater: We Want You

Calling all Buddhist babies, Catholic children, agnostic adolescents! All Muslim mothers, polytheistic papas and godless geezers! The world wants your stories, and Story City is part of the world.
Our March theme is “Dogma: Stories of a Higher Power.” We’re looking for your honest accounts of the pursuit or abandonment of god, God, or gods, whether they involve Creed, the middle path, or stale eucharist crackers. To submit a story:
1) Check out our requirements on the ‘PARTICIPATE’ section of the site.
2) Email a short synopsis of the story you’d like to tell to storycitymn@gmail.com by March 20th.
3) Tell your friends!
No story this time? Put your butt in a HUGE Theater seat on March 28th from 7-9 pm and open your ears. The show will be a combination of stories from the storytellers, scenes from the improv performers at HUGE, and some laughs, tears, and perhaps guttural noises from you. It will be epically, spiritually awesome. In the meantime, check out our podcast!

Photos from “My First Time” at The Loft Literary Center

What do you get when you combine a Twin Cities literary institution, booze, and five incredible first-time stories? These images from our January 24th event should give you some idea.

Submit to Story City “MY FIRST TIME” at The Loft

We are beyond pleased to announce that our sixth show will take place in one of Minneapolis’ finest cultural and literary institutions, The Loft Literary Center.

There, we will sully the stage with tales of embarrassment, awakening, and hopefully that tingly feeling you get when you hear the song that was playing.

The storytellers? You.

The topic? Your first time. Doing anything, mind you.

As long as it’s 5-7 minutes long, true to your life, and told without notes, we’ll put it on the show. Oh, and we have to like it.

Send an elevator pitch (a paragraph or less) of your first time to storycitymn@gmail.com by January 17th. Trust us, we will giggle WITH you, not AT you.

Story City the Podcast!

No more false promises. Story City has launched its very own podcast! As of this week you can find stories from our past events on the “podcast” page of our website and we’ll be releasing new episodes every Sunday night.

Episode 1 features a story from Adam Marquardt called “Predator and Prey.” He told his story at Story City’s event Haunted.
